Self Esteem: The Joy of Being Myself

Posted: November 06, 2019

When it’s time to perform in the studio and in life, our students are ready.  Why?  They have spent countless hours developing their self-esteem.

Self-esteem, in our studio, is known as, “the Joy of Being Myself”.

One of the main ways we practice self-esteem, is by teaching our students to make positive decisions daily. When we make positive decisions, we feel good about ourselves.  When we feel good, it’s much easier to create a positive attitude, and a positive self-image.

As an elementary school teacher and a martial arts school owner/instructor for many years, I have seen this all too often.

A child comes in hugging the parent’s leg… “Oh, he is just painfully shy.”

Painful?  For whom?  The parent or the child?

Please, PLEASE...Limit your child's IPAD, phone, and screen time.

Go into any restaurant and look around.  Most kids aren’t sitting and talking, they are glued to an Ipad, in an almost trans-like state.  Watch their eyes for more than a minute, and you will see them frozen, almost catatonic.

As a parent of a 6-year-old, a martial arts instructor (studio owner), and a NYS certified elementary school teacher, I have personally witnessed the effects of Ipads, phones, and screen time on children, my own and others.

Looking at how addicted kids are to these devices, I’m speculating that tech companies hire psychologists to assist in the programming of these games and apps, but that is purely my opinion.  I would love someone with information on that subject to weigh in, if possible.

Rude, Mean, or BULLYING?

Is it Rude, Mean, or Bullying?

With October being National Bully Prevention Month, we believe it's important to help remind our families the difference between kids being Rude, being Mean and being Bullies.  Due to an alarmingly number of kids, youth and teens harming themselves in response to their experiences, Bullying is a term that has become more prevalent in recent years. As they say, kids will be kids. And yes, children and teens can be unkind to their peers and feelings get hurt. The problem is when "kids being kids" begins to cross the line to Bullying.

While Bullying is a very emotional subject and it is important to take all accusations seriously, It is vital to determine if the behavior is bullying or was just a child being rude or mean.
